New Report Takes Coaches Inside the Minds of Their Prospect

Wouldn't it be great if you could get inside the mind of your prospect, and really understand how they go about making their final college choice?

Selling for Coaches is releasing a new 26-page report that compiles the findings of a month-long research project that answers that very question.  SFC interviewed and surveyed 250 of the top football prospects for 2008, and asked them a variety of probing questions:

  • How soon do they open their recruiting mail?
  • How carefully do they read it?
  • Who do they listen to as they ponder their decision?
  • What outside factors help them decide which college to choose?

That's just a small sample of the questions that the report attempts to answer.

One of the most interesting findings of the study revolves around what is not important to your prospects.  When asked about the mail the receive from college coaches, your prospects were clear about what role it plays in their decision-making process.  Here's an excerpt from the report, where we talk about the fact that the first recruiting letter an athlete receives is read immediately and completely.  Letters that follow, however, receive much less attention:

"Once the second letter arrives, excitement and the attention span of your prospect begins to decrease:

When we asked the same question about the second and third+ letters that they receive from coaches, here were the results:

                                                2nd Letter     3+ Letters
“Open and read it immediately”    52.6%               5.9%

“Within 7 days”                           29.0%              65.2%

"I don't open it"                       18.4%           28.9%

By the time they get the second letter, nearly half of the respondents aren’t opening it right away.  By the time the third, fourth and fifth letters arrive, nearly one-third of your prospects aren’t even bothering to open your letter!"

The lesson for college coaches, or course, is that they may need to change the way they write letters and the way they form a recruiting strategy that involves mail.  We follow-up our seven sections of findings with tips, techniques and advice for coaches that will help them implement the findings into their daily recruiting duties.

SFC Premium Members are being the sent the report at no charge.  If you're a coach who is not a Premium Member, but want to receive the 26-page special report on our survey and findings with today's top college prospects, you can order it here for only $12.00.

After ordering, we will e-mail your report as well as other helpful links and information to help you craft a better recruiting message based on these insightful findings.

This report is one-of-a-kind, and the findings give coaches a rare look into the decision making process that today's teenage student-athlete goes through in order to choose a school.  The information can play a valuable role in creating a winning strategy for signing the prospects you really want and need.

Everything You Wanted to Know About the SFC On-Campus Seminar

So, just what goes on at one of Selling for Coaches' On-Campus Seminars?  Good question.  The short answer is, "A heckuva lot!"  I'm assuming you'd like more detail, so here it goes:

  • Who do we work with?  Either entire athletic departments, or specific coaching staffs.  If you're an athletic director, you can bring us in for an in-depth group training session for all of your department's coaches, followed by one-on-one sessions with individual coaches.  Or, if you're a head coach that wants us to work with you and your staff to develop a recruiting plan and conduct more individualized training, we can do that.  We're seeing more and more head coaches who ask us to come in and help them become recruiting experts, and assist with planning their recruiting attack for the current or upcoming year.
  • How much does it cost?  Our basic fee for coming on campus and training your coaches in both group and individual settings is just $1,500, plus travel expenses.

Here's a quick list of everything that we do at an SFC On-Campus Seminar:

  • Pre-seminar sales and communciation analysis report with all participants.
  • Pre-seminar focus group survey with your current athletes, where we find out why they chose your program, who they almost chose, what they liked about the way they were recruited, and what they really think of their coaches.  It's all an effort to know what kind of improvements are needed in the way you recruit.  It's one of the most intriguing parts of our On-Campus session.
  • A four hour group training session, covering three areas of the most requested needs of your staff that we uncover during pre-seminar interviews.
  • One-on-one personal review of each of the participant's analysis report, with suggested follow-up and ways to improve.
  • Review of any recruiting materials that the staff wants consulting on, with suggested changes in presentation, wording and other aspects of a recruiting campaign.
  • Ongoing one-on-one training for twelve months to ensure continued growth and development of each coach's personal recruiting abilities.
  • Special topics or requests from the participants, time and budget allowed.

One more thing that we always get asked: "Can you give me some references of other programs that you've worked with?"  The answer is, no.  Here's why: First, we don't like our clients to have to field inquiry calls from other coaches or athletic directors.  It's just not something that we want to have our clients doing.  Secondly, we have found that our clients don't want us to work with other programs (especially those that they compete with regularly in the recruiting wars).

But, to put your mind at ease, here's what we offer: A complete money back guarantee.  If we come to your campus, work with your coaches, and you don't feel it is worth the small investment that we are asking you to make in our services, you don't pay anything (not including travel costs).  By the way, we've never had anyone ask for their money back, nor do we plan on doing it in the future.  But it's there just in case (we don't want you to lose sleep).

So there you have it.  We'd love to work with you and your staff, and are pretty sure it will be the best investment in recruiting you've ever made.  You've actually never had training like this, which is a shame because you're asked to do some very difficult and important work.  You're asked to go and convince a teenager to come to your college and compete for you.  How much more effective could you be at this crucial part of your job if you were professionally trained to do it?

Let's talk about what we can do for your staff.  Call Selling for Coaches at 866.944.6732, or e-mail me at dan@sellingforcoaches.com.  As one D1 athletic director recently told me after our training session on her campus, "I was skeptical about how good this would actually be for our coaches, but I'm blown away.  This is exactly what we needed."

We can do the same for you and your staff.
